The man on the other end is shocked. Rudo listens in as he’s being treated in a doctor’s office and starts to protest that he never said he’d join. Rudo’s interrupted by unhinged shouting from the doctor, scolding him to be grateful. He yells back, calling the doctor a crazy old man, only to be loudly corrected that she’s an old woman. Rudo repeats that all he wants is to get back to the Sphere, but his new friend reminds him how brutal it can be on the Ground for someone who comes from above. Crash Course Enjin has brought Rudo to a large, domed city, although the roof overhead seems to have been destroyed some time ago. While they grab a bite to eat, Enjin takes a moment to give him a primer on life on the Ground. Emotional energy, or Anima, has settled the Ground much like the trash from above. Anima energy gives life to the aggressive trash monsters. Regular weapons don’t work on the beasts, but treasured objects that contain Anima, called vital instruments — like Enjin’s umbrella and Rudo’s gloves — can damage them. Only a few people, known as Givers, can draw out the energy of an item imbued with Anima. Cleaners are, in essence, a gang that uses Givers to take out the trash beasts with their vital instruments. RELATED: Gachiakuta Anime to Air for Two Consecutive Cours Rudo’s thoughts turn to his father, Regto, who once told him objects can have souls. While Enjin doesn’t know how the boy can get back to the Sphere, he suggests the Cleaners’ boss might know a way. He stands and tells Rudo to wait there while he goes to find his trainer. Before he leaves, Enjin tosses a pouch at Rudo; it’s the money he got from filching and selling the boy’s Sphere clothes. As Rudo yells at him, a cat leaps on the table to steal the pouch. Rudo chases after it, keeping up as it runs down a dark alley. He grabs a stick he spots on the street and uses it to pin down the thieving cat and a furious man approaches him. That’s his staff, and he doesn’t appreciate Rudo taking it. The Wrong Foot The man forcibly grabs the stick, shoving Rudo out of the way. The boy notices the Cleaners emblem on the man’s clothing just as he activates the Anima in his weapon, the Lovely Assistaff. He addresses Rudo by his name. He’s the friend Enjin called earlier, a Cleaner and trainer named Zanka Nijiku, and he’s going to teach him a lesson — and not the educational kind. RELATED: Gachiakuta Anime Reveals Zanka New Visual, Short Trailer Rudo remembers Regto once taught him to consider another person’s feelings if he wanted them to listen to him. He cools his own anger, explains that he didn’t realize the stick belonged to someone, and apologizes. Surprisingly, Zanka responds immediately by standing down, giving an apology of his own, and smiling. That is, until Rudo genuinely attempts a smile of his own. Still unpracticed at it, Rudo’s odd grimace looks like he’s mocking Zanka, who’s now ready to fight for real. Oh, Crap! Zanka yells at Rudo about having a poor reason for joining the Cleaners and now it’s his turn to get angry — he wants to avenge his father, after all. The boy grabs whatever’s handy in the trash nearby and activates the Anima energy inside it. The trainer is astonished; Rudo has a rare ability to turn any object he touches into a vital instrument. But experience matters more, Zanka tells him, confidently taking swings at the boy — until he realizes what Rudo picked up as a weapon. It’s a plunger. A very, very used toilet plunger. Zanka, extremely grossed out, tries to run away from the poop-slinging weapon. But the enraged Rudo, who doesn’t know what a plunger is, keeps up his attacks. He finally catches Zanka, who wails when he’s hit full-force by the poop barrage. RELATED: Gachiakuta Anime Reveals New Riyo Visual, Short Trailer Later, sitting behind the wheel of a car, Enjin can’t stop cracking up. Both Givers are mortified, Zanka at the humiliating mess and Rudo for fighting with poo. A girl pops up from the backseat of the car and starts talking to the already flustered boy. The cheerful Riyo compliments his unusually colored hair and begins playing with it. Rudo, who’s rarely been close to a girl, stares at her open-mouthed while Enjin grins in the driver’s seat.
