The year is nearly halfway through and it’s time to see which openings from the spring season were the best of the best. I asked for your votes and you all of course came through and it’s time to breakdown which shows managed to get into the top five. There’s some heavy hitters in regard to musical groups and a nice variety of different kinds of shows for spring, but which series managed to come out on top as your favorite opening of spring? #5: The Apothecary Diaries – "Kusuhiki" by Mrs. Green Apple 7 percent Winter’s second place series returns with a new opening and shows it’s still a force to be reckoned with. “Kusuhiki” is a fun track that provides a nice atmosphere for the opening itself, but the animation truly shines here. There are quite a few fun and neat point-of-view shots that are something we don’t often see and there’s also some art style changes that do a good job of making this an opening that’s visually dynamic. It’s a fun way to kick start this list. #4: WITCH WATCH – "Watch Me!" by YOASOBI 11 percent YOASOBI continues to be a hit within the anime music sphere as they bring us yet another track that’s sure to be another bop. This is a really fun opening with how they’re able to showcase a lot of fun animation in some different styles. There’s the neat aspect of changing up how they present the WITCH WATCH title in the first half and another part that is incredibly well done is how they’re able to showcase the credits within the animation. Such as having it show up in the screens within a train or as a speech bubble during the manga portion, making everything feel more dynamic than if the credits just appeared on screen as you’d expect. #3: My Hero Academia: Vigilantes – "Kekka Orai" by Kocchi no Kento 12 percent Now this is an opening that wears its influences on its sleeves. It’s no secret that American superhero comics were an influence on My Hero Academia as a whole and this opening really showcases that. From the art that at times invokes the classic pop art style to how the English credits boxes look like they’re ripped from a comic, this opening animation wants you to know how much it embraces its influences. Plus, you get an opening song that does a good job of hyping you up for an episode as is tradition for the overall series. #2: TO BE HERO X – "INERTIA" by SawanoHiroyuki[nZk]:Rei 16 percent Certainly if you want someone to give you an opening that’ll provide a great song, but one that’ll get you absolutely pumped for an episode, Sawano Hiroyuki is one of the best at that. They do that once again as this is a track that does a great job of building up to its chorus and by that point, you’re primed and ready to dive into TO BE HERO X. The animation also does a good job of supporting this with how it speeds up alongside the music. Along with that, the change in animation style throughout the opening is also really well done which follows how the show does it as well. #1: KOWLOON GENERIC ROMANCE – "Summertime Ghost" by Wednesday Campanella 20 percent We reach the number one spot and it’s time for some vibes. KOWLOON GENERIC ROMANCE is a series that often talks about nostalgia and you certainly get that with this opening. From the song itself having a classic vibe, to the way the animation sometimes switches from 16:9 to 4:3, and of course, the idea of using Kowloon as a setting in and of itself. While this is the spring season, this is the kind of song that’s perfect for driving on a warm night with nothing else around you except yourself and the world in front of your windshield. You get that hint of nostalgia, while also having a bop that’ll last you from spring until fall. Congratulations to KOWLOON GENERIC ROMANCE for being your top spring opening and a big thanks again to all of you for voting and making your voice heard!
