With Into the Dead: Our Darkest Days out now in Early Access on Steam, developer PikPok has just released their first content update for the shelter survival game. As detailed in the Early Access Roadmap, Update #1 aims to ratchet up the tension with new features to keep even the most stalwart survivors on their toes. These new additions are in addition to major gameplay balancing changes, adjustments, and fixes to various aspects of the game.
New to Into the Dead: Our Darkest Days is what’s referred to as Curveballs: Environmental and world events that affect shelters, either positively or negatively. These occur at random or are based on meeting certain conditions, depending on the district you’re in, what survivors are in your shelter, and even specific dates.
Also new are zombified survivors. If a survivor is killed while out scavenging, there is now a chance you’ll encounter them as a survivor upon returning to that location. Speaking of encounters, if you’re looking to make a quick getaway, you’re now able to barge through unlocked doors. You’ll suffer minor health loss and a potential injury as a result, but it’s better than being eaten.
The update introduces an expanded range of throwables. Players are now able to toss Bricks to knock down enemies, as well as use Pebbles to distract or lure individual zombies away from a group. There are also Pipe Bombs that explode immediately upon contact with an enemy or bounce off surfaces before detonating. You’ll need to be careful when using them, as getting caught in the blast isn’t the most ideal outcome.
Lastly, you have access to a new starting location for your shelter in Stanton & Son’s Meta. Located in the Seneca district, it’s also available as a new scavenging location.
