If you love a cozy series with a clumsy but brave protagonist who’s prone to blushing — so much blushing! — this anime could be your spring season sleeper hit. Opening Number “Illuminate” is an effervescent bop featuring the sincere voice of Shugo Nakamura. Fast-paced and high-energy, fun opening songs just like this one easily set the tone for the anime hijinks, friendship and romance to come. Flowery photos of the supporting cast flash by and add a touch of fresh springtime air to the vivacious melody. Sweet smiles and cute animals round out the opening, wrapping you in warmth with the start of each episode. Here's the Story During the ceremony of blessings, high school student Sophia Riller can’t help being nervous when it’s her turn. The animal god that chooses a person sets the tone and direction of their life from that moment forward. So when shy, unassuming Sophia sees that she’s been picked by the super-powerful gorilla god, she can’t believe her eyes. With its rare blessing, Sophia is granted superhuman strength and put on a path to knighthood. All she wanted was an unassuming life, and she’s about to be the center of attention! She’s also busy trying not to literally crush things with her newfound strength. What’s a gorilla god’s go-to girl to do? Coziest Characters Sophia meets Isaac Chien and Eddy Feles when they try out to become junior knights together, and the pair almost immediately earn the titles of Coziest Characters. Isaac, blessed by the dog god, is basically a golden retriever himself; Eddy, who won’t reveal his blessing, is as standoffish but secretly affectionate as a cat. Together the two make perfect friends for Sophia, looking out for her — and she looks out for them in return. Ending Notes Megumi Ogata lends her distinctive voice to “Serendipity,” the guitar-riffing ending song of the series. Viewers are treated to a serene and sophisticated illustration of our four young heroes filled with drifting rose petals and warm sunshine. Not only does he make a quick appearance here and there with a well-timed thumbs up to show his approval, but you learn that the gentle Sophia has her own kind of innate strength that makes her a favorite of the powerful god. She’s thoughtful, selfless and instinctively acts to shield others, traits that anyone — gorilla god or not — can appreciate. Turning what would ostensibly be a power meant for fighting and hurting others into a force for helping people is a delightful twist and immediately endears both Sophia and her world to viewers. She might try her hardest to stay out of the spotlight, but Sophia is an unassuming hero who can’t help standing out because her acts of courage and kindness inspire the same in others.
