Fukushima Prefecture will start streaming Fukufuku no Chizu , an original anime short film by In This Corner of the World director Sunao Katabuchi, on a special website starting March 5, 2026. This anime short was produced as the second special project of the Fukushima Map Friends Association , launched in December 2024 with the aim of delivering the comprehensive information magazine "Fukushima Map" to a wider audience. The first project Aka no Kioku , produced in March 2025 by Look Back director Kiyotaka Oshiyamam who was born in Fukushima Prefecture, has garnered over 3 million total views on YouTube. Key visual Fukufuku no Chizu , rooted in the worldview of Fukushima Map, depicts Fukushima's landscapes and the lives of its people through the eyes of an overseas protagonist visiting Fukushima for the first time. Katabuchi directed the anime short on his own screenplay at CONTRAIL. In This Corner of the World 's original manga author Fumiyo Kono provided the original character designs for the production, alongside artist Kotringo, who worked on the anime film adaptation of In This Corner of the World , providing the music. Sunao Katabuchi Message Video Sunao Katabuchi Message from Sunao Katabuchi: I'm currently working on a slightly larger film project, but even while juggling that, I felt I absolutely had to take on this short film project. Memories come flooding back of scouting locations in Fukushima in 2013 to create a short anime for NHK's earthquake recovery support theme song. Thirteen years later, holding the “Fukushima Map,” I traveled all over Fukushima Prefecture scouting locations. Then, I was reminded anew that each and every one of the various artifacts depicted across this “map” had actually been created by human hands over the long span of time. Traditional crafts, delicious foods, of course, but also trees hundreds of years old, and the rich rural landscapes. These things exist only because of human life, because of human hands. I had the protagonist appear in this anime as someone who gradually becomes aware of such things. She is a philosopher who came from overseas, a thinker. She loses her way and gets lost in this land she visits for the first time. She has a terrible sense of direction. But thanks to taking a tremendous detour, she encounters all sorts of things. She becomes aware, discovers. This is a story of blessing. Working on this project, I was also delighted to collaborate once again with Fumiyo Kono-san and Kotringo-san from the film In This Corner of the World.
