It’s hard to believe that New Blood Interactive’s Gloomwood has been in Early Access on Steam for the past three years. Still, developers Dillon Rogers, David Szymanski, Nate Berens and Thomas Porta have been cranking out updates for the stealth horror game, with the latest being the Hightown Update to start off 2026.
As revealed in the new trailer for update, players have a new toy to play with, a new area to explore, and a new foe in the pig-faced constable. Players will be able to explore the new Hightown District, which is appropriately gothic and gloomy. They’ll also be able to make use of a new revolver that is fixed to a rifle stock, and comes with a scope for those aforementioned “pesky” constables.
For those who have yet to play Gloomwood (and never checked out Aaron’s Early Access review), the game harkens back to Looking Glass Studios’ stealth classic Thief, but with a helping of horror thrown in. You play as “The Doctor”, and following your mysterious abduction, you must escape the twisted Victorian metropolis known as Gloomwood, which is in the midst of a horrifying transformation. Armed with your trusty canesword, you take to the shadows as you uncover the accursed mystery hidden within the fog.
Speaking of hidden, you’ll need to stick to the shadows in order to survive. Much like Thief, Gloomwood uses a detailed stealth and sound system that tracks your visibility and just how noisy you are, alerting any foes to your presence. You’ll need to use your gear to distract and stealthily take out enemies. You can also find objects to pick up, throw, climb, smash and use to your advantage.
