The Timeline of Immortality: Fushi’s Journey in To Your Eternity (So Far)

To Your Eternity ( Fumetsu no Anata e ), the anime adaptation of Yoshitoki Oima’s manga, is a profound story about life, death, memory, and the spiritual cost of immortality. The protagonist, Fushi, is an ever-evolving entity who gains new forms and memories from those who die while leaving a significant mark on him. Across eras spanning ancient villages, medieval kingdoms, warfare, and modern society, Fushi undergoes a deep internal transformation — not physically, but spiritually and emotionally — as the centuries unfold. Let’s review the timeline of his journey so far, from being a rock to a human boy with amazing powers, focusing on the time progression, Fushi’s developmental stage, and how human society evolves in contrast to his perpetual existence. Anime: Episode 1 The story begins with an orb cast onto Earth by the enigmatic observer, The Beholder. The orb first imitates inert forms (a rock, then moss) and eventually transforms into a dying wolf. It wanders until it encounters a solitary human boy in a snowbound, long-abandoned village. The boy, clinging to the hope that his family will return from an expedition, accepts the wolf as a companion, unaware of its true nature. Their short journey introduces Fushi to the core concepts of the series: walking, warmth, hunger, companionship, and finally death, when the boy succumbs to illness. Fushi inherits his form, establishing the emotional foundation of the series: growth through connection, and the pain of inevitable loss. Spirit Bear Arc Time Progression: Undetermined months after the boy’s death. Anime: Episodes 2 – 5 Fushi wanders south and encounters early human civilization. In Ninannah, a little girl named March is selected as a sacrificial offering to appease the giant bear god, Oniguma. March escapes and soon encounters Fushi, but they are both quickly captured by the Yanome people, led by Hayase. Despite a rescue attempt by Parona, a young woman from March's village, all of them — including the captured bear Oniguma — are imprisoned. Fushi, Parona, March, and the old lady Pioran form a small, improvised family. March is the one who gives Fushi his name, teaches him to eat, speak, and feel affection. When Oniguma is slain and March dies, Fushi inherits her memory and screams in grief — the first clear sign of emotional awareness beyond instinct. This arc represents the character's early childhood, where he learns to love but also experiences heartbreak, yet is still too mentally young to fully process the loss. Post Spirit Bear Arc Time Progression: Months to approximately a year later. Anime: Episode 6 Alone again, Fushi is found by Pioran, who has managed to escape. Her presence hastens his development; his vocabulary quickly improves. They board a boat destined for Takunaha, where Pioran's old lover lives. While traversing a forest, Fushi faces his natural enemy, a Nokker. These fleshy cores can hijack his different forms and steal his memories. During this time, he also meets his creator, The Beholder, who explains Fushi's purpose: to protect the world. By the end of the episode, they arrive at their destination, having survived a deadly encounter with the monster. Takunaha Arc Time Progression: Weeks later. Anime: Episodes 7 – 13 Fushi finds a measure of peace living with Gugu, Rean, the Booze Man, and Pioran. For the first time, he experiences what could be considered a normal life — chores, sibling-like bickering, celebration, and even teenage awkwardness. He learns love not through sacrifice, but through consistent coexistence. However, The Beholder observes that peace slows his growth since he is not acquiring new stimuli or growing physically stronger. Four years pass, and Fushi becomes far more eloquent and looks older due to avoiding transformations. But soon the Nokkers return, and tragedy strikes. Gugu dies saving Rean, imparting a lesson in heroism and self-sacrifice. Fushi matures rapidly through this pain, finally understanding that love gives life meaning even when loss is inevitable. This period marks Fushi’s teenage years, representing growth, first love, and the discovery of personal values. Jananda Island Arc Time Progression: Over 4 years later. Anime: Episodes 13 – 20 After leaving the Booze Man's house, Fushi reunites with Pioran. They plan to board a ship to an island where Fushi can train his powers, but instead, they are taken to Jananda, a lawless prison territory where criminals and their children fight to survive. Here, he meets Tonari Dalton and a group of kids hardened by violence. The island is driven by selfishness and death, and Fushi reunites with Hayase, the Yanome woman who has developed an intense, destructive obsession with him. Fushi is forced to confront a moral choice: kill or be killed? He initially refuses to take lives, but reality demands harsh decisions. He acquires Parona’s form during his time on the island, gaining her abilities and signifying the importance of her early death. The Nokkers attack, escalating the conflict and stealing more of Fushi’s forms, leaving him with a wound deeper than physical pain: the loss of the people who shaped him. After a massive attack, many islanders, including Tonari's friends, die. The survivors, led by Tonari, eventually win the fight. Fushi departs, leaving Hayase tied up in a boat. Afterwards, Fushi reunites with Pioran, and together they move to Sarlnine, an island with a lush forest. Eventually Pioran’s health deteriorates and she dies. Fushi remains on the Island. To Your Eternity Season 2 RELATED: Fushi's Growth In To Your Eternity Teaches Us To Be More Human The Guardians Arc Time Progression: About 40 years after arriving on the island. Anime: Episodes 1 – 3 After decades alone on the island, Fushi grows older. Nearly 40 years have passed since he settled there, driven by the fear of losing anyone else. As he is about to depart to face Nokkers attacking innocent humans, he is discovered by Hayase’s descendant, Hisame. With her arrival comes The Guardians, a cult-like organization that worships him like a god and vows to protect him, even at the cost of their own autonomy. Fushi, who once craved connection, now becomes an icon that people project meaning onto. This reunion leads to another with Tonari, her owl Ligard, and Sandel, who are now in their 50s. Years pass, and Fushi keeps moving from town to town, encountering several generations of Hayase’s successors, ending with the arrival of Kahaku, the sixth successor and first male in the lineage, over a century later. This arc explores the distortion of legacy and how love can become obsession over generations. Fushi must learn to interact with society again, not as a friend, but as a mythic being others judge, revere, or fear. The arc concludes with the introduction of Prince Bonchien Nicoli La Tasty Peach Uralis. Uralis Kingdom Arc Time Progression: Over a century since Fushi’s encounter with Hisame. Anime: Episodes 3 – 6 Fushi is brought to the Uralis Kingdom, where politics and royalty replace survival as the battlefield. Prince Bonchien (Bon) becomes one of the most influential companions in Fushi’s life. Bon can see the dead, giving voice to those Fushi has lost, and acts as a bridge between Fushi and his grief. This arc also introduces the Bennett Church, which regards Fushi as a heretic. While in the Kingdom, Fushi learns how power structures work. Instead of simply surviving, he must now consider justice, policy, duty, and public perception. With Bon’s and Kahaku’s support, Fushi travels around helping villages and fighting the Nokkers. During these travels, Fushi is asked to help the daughter of a noble. He states he is unable to heal or bring people back to life, but Bon discovers that is not the case. Despite his long life, Fushi is still not a full-fledged adult; the concept of adult love still eludes him, despite Kahaku’s advances on him while Fushi is in Parona's form. Eventually, Bon and Fushi are captured as heretics. Bennett Church Arc Time Progression: Months after arriving in Uralis. Anime: Episodes 6 – 9 The Bennett Church, fearing Fushi’s immortality, declares him a threat to divine order. He is captured, studied, judged, and used as both a miracle and a demon. Fushi experiences persecution firsthand — not because he is dangerous, but because he does not fit the limits of human belief. His closeness to a godlike existence cannot be accepted. The arc challenges religion, fanaticism, and the ownership of a living being. Fushi escapes, but leaves with scars not on his body, but on his soul, realizing that faith and love can twist into violence. Bon is left to be executed, unable to renounce his loyalty to Fushi. With Fushi’s help, Bon survives and starts a new life with Todo and Chabo. But their newfound freedom doesn’t last long, as the Nokkers prepare a large-scale attack, and Fushi ends up losing many of his forms. Now he must prepare for war in a year. Renril Arc Time Progression: +1 year (war preparation). Anime: Episodes 10 – 20 The Nokkers announce an invasion of Renril, giving Fushi one year to prepare. This is his first time leading armies, training civilians, and planning defense on a scale far beyond personal conflict. During this time, Fushi keeps growing stronger, understanding his potential more and more. After rescuing Eko, a member of the mysterious Doki people capable of communicating through their pots, Fushi learns more about his power to feel the emotions of others. He comes to understand that his abilities allow him to become one with everything that surrounds him, empowering him for his next fight. He also makes new friends in Kai (a former Uralis Kingdom soldier), Hairo (a former Bennett Church soldier), and Messar (2nd Prince of Renril and Informant).  During the inevitable war, Fushi discovers he can actually revive his friends — March, Gugu, Tonari, Oniguma, and others — learning to wield immortality not just as survival, but as hope. The city becomes a symbol of unity between past and present lives. The final battle pushes Fushi toward transcendence. He becomes everywhere at once — a network of consciousness, no longer bound to a single body. His humanity expands beyond flesh.
