’90s Serial Killer Film ‘The Ugly’ Heads to Blu-ray in February

Often considered New Zealand’s answer to The Silence of the Lambs, The Ugly will be released on Blu-ray on February 10 via Unearthed Films.

The uncut 1997 psychological horror film has been newly remastered in 4K from a 35mm interpositive.

Confined to a mental institution, disturbed young serial killer Simon is tormented by cruel orderlies and his own personal demons, including “The Ugly” which compels him to kill.

At his request, Dr. Karen Schumaker arrives to discover whether Simon is fit to be released back into society. As the terrifying secrets within Simon’s mind are revealed, no one will be left unscathed by the horrors about to be unleashed.

Writer-director Scott Reynolds. made his feature debut on the film, which features makeup effects by Wētā Workshop (The Lord of the Rings, Krampus).

Paolo Rotondo, Rebecca Hobbs, Jennifer Ward-Lealand, and Roy Ward star.
