14 Anime Films Which Surpassed One Billion Yen Box Office Revenue in 2025

The Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan (MPPA) — an industry organization comprised of the four major motion picture production and distribution companies including Shochiku, Toho, Toei and Kadokawa Pictures — held a New Year's press conference in Tokyo on January 28 to announce the Japanese box office data for fiscal year 2025 (ranging from December 2024 to November 2025). The organization also followed with publishing the data on their official website . 1,305 movies were released in Japanese theaters in 2025, including 694 domestic films (up from 685 the previous year) and 611 foreign films (up from 505 the previous year). The total annual box office revenue reached 274.452 billion yen (1.8 billion USD), a 67.4 billion yen (440 million USD) increase from the previous year, setting a new all-time record since box office figures began being announced in 2000. The number of theatergoers reached 188.756 million, an increase of 44.31 million from the previous year. This marks the second-highest figure since 2000, only behind the record set in 2019. The number of screens nationwide was 3,697, an increase from 3,675 the previous year. Box office revenue for domestic movies totaled 207.569 billion yen (1.357 billion USD), an increase of 51.7 billion yen (337 million USD) from last year. The top-grossing Japanese film Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle , which has earned 39.14 billion yen (255 million USD) to date, accounted for 18.86% of the total box office revenue for domestic films. Meanwhile, the share of foreign films was 66.883 billion yen (437 million USD), an increase of 15.7 billion yen (102 million USD) compared to last year. The top-grossing foreign film was Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning with 5.28 billion yen (34.5 million USD). The number of films surpassing one billion yen in box office revenue — a benchmark for recent hits in Japan — includes 38 domestic films (up seven from the previous year) and 12 foreign films (up two from the previous year). Of the 38 Japanese films, 14 were anime movies — the same number as last year . Six were live-action film adaptations of Japanese manga or anime (up from four): Cells at Work! (#5 / 6.36 billion yen), 5 Centimeters per Second (#19 / 2.3 billion yen), Trillion Game (#22 / 2.05 billion yen), UNDER NINJA (#28 / 1.59 billion yen), Chinmoku no Kantai: Hokkyokukai Daikaisen / The Silent Service: The Great Sea Battle of The Arctic Ocean (#35 / 1.15 billion yen) and The Solitary Gourmet The Movie (#37 / 1.03 billion yen).
