Depending on your generation, there was a time when you’d read comics through physical newspapers or magazines. Now that technology has made us heavily reliant on our electronic devices (like our smartphones and laptops), the way we consume media has also evolved. Introducing webcomics: a.k.a. comics, but on the internet. Where we once had to flip through pages, we can now scroll on the digital screen to read. But the best part about webcomics? They’ve gotten so popular that many of them have graced our screens in animated format! I’ve curated a list of webcomics that have received an animated adaptation, most of them being manhwa, but the popularity of these titles cannot be understated. If you’re interested in reading the original webcomics after checking out the adaptation, I’ve also shared where you can read them. Here are webcomics-turned-animation that you should check out! Let’s Play RELATED: Let's Play Anime Director Daiki Tomiyasu on Adapting the LA Charm from In-N-Out and Beyond You may have heard or seen Let’s Play on WEBTOON, the popular platform for webtoons that not only features South Korean authors but also authors from all over the world. Mongie, the creator of Let’s Play , was a heavy-hitter, garnering 7.5 million subscribers and earning a nomination for the Eisner Award in 2019. The series has since found a new home and now has an anime that’s produced by OLM. The story focuses on Sam Young, a young software developer with a passion for video games. She receives a harsh critique from a game reviewer known as Marshall Law, and due to his popularity, his fans review-bomb the game. Soon after, she discovers that he’s her new next-door neighbor. As Sam navigates the expectations of eventually taking over her dad’s company and wanting to make her own games, she juggles friendships and romantic relationships. It’s originally a fantasy web novel written by Chugong and has received a few adaptations, including a webtoon, anime, and K-drama that’s in development. In Solo Leveling , the world is ravaged by dungeons, each filled with deadly monsters, and the only ones who can fend them off are hunters — human warriors with supernatural abilities. Sung Jinwoo is always the weakest of the bunch, until one dungeon run leads him to a mysterious program called the System. Jinwoo chooses strength as his main ability to level up, and as he fights through hordes of monsters in every type of dungeon imaginable, he gains powerful abilities in the hopes of curing his mother of the Eternal Sleep Disease. One day, Rachel decides to enter the Tower and, not wanting to lose the only person he cares about, Bam also enters the Tower, not knowing what awaits him. What is the Tower? It’s a unique structure with various environments, permeated by an element called “Shinsu,” or magic. The higher the floor, the higher your status, which also sees an improvement in your living conditions. Anyone who wants to ascend the Tower must prove themselves through difficult tests. Tower of God is another show where a weak protagonist gets stronger as the story goes on. Where to currently read: WEBTOON The God of High School RELATED: A Beginner’s Guide to Manhwa For a change of pace, The God of High School focuses on martial arts, though there are many instances of using “Borrowed Powers” to elevate the fights. Mori Jin is a 17-year-old martial artist who receives an invitation to join the Martial Arts tournament called “The God of High School.” Sponsored by a shady corporation, the tournament sees fighters from high schools all over South Korea to eventually become representatives in the World Tournament. The prize? Getting any wish fulfilled by the hosting corporation. In The God of High School , there are three realms: Human, Sage, and Heavenly. The first one is self-explanatory; the second and third are for demons and powerful gods, respectively. Many of the gods mentioned or seen in the series are influenced by myths and legends from all over the world. If you’re looking for a refreshing spin on tourney-focused anime, this show checks off that box. Where to currently read: WEBTOON Noblesse Are you a fan of hot vampires? Then you’ll love Noblesse ! He wakes up in an abandoned building in South Korea where he learns about the modern world. But it’s more than just an old vampire trying to blend into society. When Rai enrolls in high school and befriends a handful of folks, they get into dangerous situations that involve a secret organization, all while trying to uncover Rai’s past.
